Adoption Questionnaire

The dogs listed on this page are in shelters and are in danger of being euthanized.

They need foster/permanent homes ASAP.

ACDRA does not propose to know the parentage of mixes and, by this statement, informs potential adopters that we cannot and do not assure that the parentage of ACD-mixes include cattle dog. Potential adopters are advised that the most appropriate approach to selecting a companion is to objectively evaluate their own situation and needs and to match that with the personality and behavior of the adoptee, regardless of parentage.

The dogs listed here have not been evaluated by ACDRA, thus we cannot vouch personally for them. We are offering these listings as a courtesy to help these dogs find homes and inquiries should be directed to those listed with each one.

If you would like to list an ACD in a shelter in our region, please contact the State Shelter Representative for your state. If no state rep is listed, please click here to request listing on this page: shelterlistings@acdrescueassociation.com.

Nina is a 6 year-old spayed female Australian Cattle Dog. She is house-broken, and is good with cats and dogs. As far as humans are concerned, she does pick and choose who she likes. Nina is very sweet and affectionate. She loves to play ball. Please e-mail info@cthumane.org or call (860)442-8583. Ask for Meagan.

Danbury Animal Welfare Society   Bethel, CT   dogs@daws.org

Happy is a young, medium-sized male Cattle Dog/Collie mix. Happy absolutely LOVES attention and play time. He is an energetic boy who loves going on trips and is great in the car. Happy is involved in our in-shelter training classes. So far, he walks well on a leash, sits, stays and waits on command. What a good boy! Who doesn’t want a trained guy like this? We are seeking a home where he can continue his training and be given lots of love and attention. Happy has come a long way to find his very special forever home. DAWS rescued Happy from a high-kill shelter. Note: Adult home and dog experience required. If you are interested in Happy, please contact the Danbury Animal Welfare Society at dogs@daws.org.

CT Humane Society   203-227-4137

Hank is a 1 year-old altered male ACD mix. He was originally adopted from a farm in Montana and was dropped off at the shelter April 10 after his owner moved away. He was given run of the house and is housebroken. He does jump up on people, but knows basic commands (being food-motivated). He has a decent temperament: still puppyish, very energetic. He was a little guardy when we tested him for food possesion/aggression, but did not growl or bite; he has shown no possession of rawhide or toys. He may need some leash training as he bites on the leash when walked, but this could be due to being caged and not getting the level of exercise necessary for the breed. He is very kennel-aggressive towards the other dogs, which is why we are trying to get him into rescue. He has shown no dog aggression outside the kennel that I am aware of, but we have not officially tested him with other dogs.

Harvest Hills Animal Shelter   Fryeburg, ME   207-935-4358   hhas@fairpoint.net

Max is a 3 year-old male ACD who was brought to the shelter recently after living with a homeless man for a while. He doesn’t do well on adoption day because he lunges and barks when people approach his kennel. Actually he is a very sweet guy once he’s out in the “real world” but potential adopters aren’t taking the time to get to know the real Max. He loves to go for walks on a leash and is very calm and mild-mannered once he’s out and around people.

MARYLAND

Humane Society of Carroll County   Westminster, MD 21158   410-848-4810 or 410-875-5379

Molly is a happy, healthy dog who is a bit rambunctious and often doesn’t know her own strength. She needs to find a home where her new owners will work with her and give her a job to do: no lying around like a couch potato; she wants to work and play hard. When visiting, just ask to see Molly, who is the 5 year-old, female Australian Cattle Dog / Dalmation mix.

Humane Society of Carroll County   Westminster, MD 21158   410-848-4810 or 410-875-5379

My name is Whip, because I’ve been told that I’m as smart as a whip. I listen well. I will sit, lie down and stay when told to do so. I am a 1 1/2 year-old neutered male Australian Cattle Dog. I am looking for a home with older children and plenty for me to do. I am an active fellow who needs to be kept busy. Oh yeah, if you haven’t noticed, I am missing one ear, but don’t worry, my hearing is just fine. It gives me that much more personality, don’t you think?

Queen Annes County Department of Animal Control   Queenstown, MD   410.758.2393   QACAnimalControl@qac.org

My name is Shelly. I might be a bit chubby but I am as sweet as I am chubby. I am new to the shelter so I’m a bit shy. I really like it when they give me lots of love in here. I am very well-behaved. I do not understand why I am here and really need to get into a loving home where I can love you back. Please consider taking me home.

Amelia is a 2 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix who was brought to our shelter as a stray. She is a wonderful dog, very loving and affectionate, but we feel she would be better off in a home with children over 10 years old.

Humane Center of Harford County   Fallston, MD 21047   (410) 836-1090   adopt@harfordshelter.org

Noah is a shy but sweet dog. At first he seemed a little fearful, but it didn’t take him very long to trust us and show just how nice he could be. He is about 3 years old and came in because his owners were moving and could not take him. Even though he is pretty good with other dogs and excellent with kids we believe he would probably do better in a calmer home. If you do have other dogs in your family, it is our policy to have you bring your other dog(s) up to the shelter to meet him. Noah has not been tested around cats. The shelters phone number is 410-836-1090 and there email is adopt@harfordshelter.org or the people interested in him can email me.

MASSACHUSETTS

Animal Shelter Inc.   Sterling, MA   978-422-8585   staff@sterlingshelter.org

Princess is a beautiful and loving ACD/Terrier older puppy (about 10 months) who came into our lives after being adopted from, then returned, to Sterling Animal Shelter. Unfortunately for Princess her adoptive family did not know how to meet her physical and mental activity needs and she came back to the shelter with lots of negative attention seeking behaviors and extremely untapped energy levels. She was a handful!

We have now had Princess for a few months and her transformation is incredible. She has worked very hard and the great dog inside has come out. She has flourished with LOTS of exercise, interaction, activity and most of all positive reinforcement. Some examples include bringing a toy over versus barking and biting at you for attention, lying down while we eat and nicely waiting for a snack versus jumping up to get food, sitting down to get her harness on versus grabbing and biting her leash, waiting nicely for her food versus knocking it out of your hand... you get the picture. She will always be a high-energy pup so she needs a home where her energy is welcomed, understood and creatively focused.

Princess is very sweet and very loving. She loves to cuddle on the couch, get and give kisses, play games, share meals, go in the car with you and in general just be with you anywhere anytime. She absolutely soaks up love and affection! She has the cutest face, expressions and manners. She is funny and goofy and always up for a new game or activity. She is a love!!!

Princess’ exercise is CRITICAL. We cannot stress this enough. She is NOT a mellow or quiet pup. She MUST go to the dog park, offleash, play with other dogs, chase the ball, etc. for a minimum of an hour each day. She also needs lots of interaction and mental stimulation so would be great for someone who works from home, has a flexible schedule or can take her to work. She would not do well in a home where she must be left alone for hours or required to live in an apartment or condo without a yard. With work she could be a great firsbee or agility pup.

Princess is super smart, interested in everything and everyone and very in tune to all that is happening around her. She greets everyone she sees (usually barking and/or jumping which is getting better). She absolutely LOVES everyone — human, canine, feline, etc. We can’t decide whether other dogs in the house makes things easier or more difficult with Princess as she can be relentless in her quest to get them to play. It gets her energy out and keeps her occupied but also makes it difficult for her (and you and the other pup) to have any down time.

For the right person she will be an amazing friend and loving addition to your family. She is a real treasure!!!

Hera is a 1.5 year-old spayed female Australian Cattle Dog / Collie mix, good with kids 8 years of age and older, other dogs and cats. Hera is here because there were too many animals in her previous home. She has beautiful colorings and is waiting for her loving forever home.

New Hampshire Humane Society   Laconia, NH   (603)524-3252   Adoption@nhhumane.org

Tenny was surrendered to us when her owners didn’t have enough time for her. Tenny is a little shy at first, but once she gets to know you, she is a big lap dog! She has tons of energy and would make a great hiking companion. She is an Australian Cattle Dog mix.

Austin is a ruggedly handsome 8 year-old neutered male Australian Cattle Dog. He is a sweet and patient fellow with an endearing nature and a heart of gold. Austin is having a difficult time adjusting to life at the shelter after having been surrendered by his owners. We’re doing our best to keep him happy but we really hope he’ll find a new home soon. He’s a very good boy. P.S. — He is good with children, likes other dogs and LOVES cats!

Burlington County Animal Shelter   Mount Holly, NJ   609-265-5073

If calling the shelter about this dog, please refer to ID# D-8322 when calling. Thanks!

Atlantic County Animal Shelter  Pleasantville, NJ  609-485-2345  TerryPetruzzi@yahoo.com

Olivia is shy and timid when approached but once you get her out of her kennel, she sticks to you like glue. She was great for all aspects of her temperament test, walks nicely on a leash, and loves to give you kisses. This breed is normally very active and likes and needs to work. She may be this calm now because of her shyness, and would be best placed with someone who understands the breed and their characteristics. Once she gets used to her surroundings and feels secure, her true spirit will most likely appear.

My name is Marley and I am one cool dog. I love dogs and kids, but I’m not too good around cats or horses. You see, that is why I am here. My owner had horses and my herding instincts told me to chase them. Anyways, I am already spayed and housebroken. I am good on a leash and I can sit on command. My birthday is September 25 and really want to be adopted by then. Maybe you can help! Please come and get to know how smart and charming cattle dogs can be!

He may be adopted by picking up an application at our shelter or by requesting one to be faxed to you. Submit your application in person or fax it back to us to be considered as a potential adopter. Hi! My name is Sophie! I’m a 3 year-old Cattle Dog with an extremely cool personality. I have lots of energy and love to play ball. I am very affectionate and very much enjoy the company of people. I would be an ideal dog for a single woman who lives alone. Without a doubt, I prefer to be an “only child” and don’t really like to be around other dogs or cats. Because of my breed, I will need time outside to run. I’m incredibly intelligent and resposive. With a little bit of training, I’d be a regular “Doggie Einstein”. If you’d like to adopt a smart and loyal dog like me, please give call Gina at 803-925-9256.

PENNSYLVANIA

Huntingdon County Humane Society   Huntingdon, PA   814-643-7387   hchspets@verizon.net

*** ADOPTED!!! ***

Hi, friends! I’m Sunshine, and I’m sure to bring some brightness to your day! I was found as a stray recently and I didn’t have any collar or ID on, so no one can determine where I came from. I’m estimated to be about a year old and I weigh 35-40 pounds. I’m pretty quiet here at the shelter; the other dogs like to bark a bunch, but I just watch the world through my kennel door. Cattledogs are happiest when they have a job to do, so perhaps you can teach me to work for you!

York SPCA   York, PA   717-764-6109   dward@ycspca.com

Roni was a stray in a county park and was so frightened she had to be box-trapped. Once she was safe, she became a different dog. They spayed her and removed some mammary lumps that had become encapsulated. All of the shelter workers are very fond of her but know she isn’t getting the attention she needs in the shelter atmosphere.

Roni is a nice girl: very attentive, likes people and is very alert. She really wants a home of her own. She hears well, and tolerates being handled. She’s very smart and has plenty of personality. If anyone needs more info just contact Monica at brynmawr@brynmawrcattledogs.com.

Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter   Chambersburg, PA   717-263-5791   cvasadmin@innernet.net

Ralph is a tan cattle dog mix. He is 2-3 years old. We recommend that he goes to a home with children 10 years or older. He is a little shy at first but once he knows and likes you, he is affectionate. Ralph can be silly at times. He would do best if he had a job to do. Adoption fees include spaying or neutering, vaccinations (excluding Rabies), AVID ID microchip, collar, a dog training DVD, de-worming treatments, flea/ear mite treatments, and temperament testing. There will be an addition to the adoption price if you reside in our county and you want to obtain a current dog license from us.

RHODE ISLAND

Rhode Island SPCA   Riverside, RI   401-438-8150   liljunie@comcast.net

Starr is a five year-old spayed female who was too much dog for her family. They did not have the space for her as she likes to roam and run.

A temperament evaluation was done on Starr and she was found to be social and playful (especially fetch and tug). She enjoyed physical contact and did not shy away from any tugging of tail, ears, teeth, feet. She showed no rawhide or food aggression, and actually brought the rawhide over to play fetch with it. During a greeting with a pomeranian, Starr basically ignored him even though he was barking and lunging at her, She is a happy dog, and would make a great addition to a family who understands the breed.

VERMONT

Rutland County Humane Society   Pittsford, VT   (802) 483-6700   adoptions@rchsvt.org

Zipper is a 6 year-old neutered blue male Australian Cattle Dog who weighs 44 lbs. He is gentle and well-mannered with people and is overall a very polite dog! He has good manners around cats and likes some dogs. Zipper was brought to RCHS on April 3 after his owner passed away and the new owners of the farm did not want to keep him. He should probably go home with a family with kids 8 years old or older. If you have a dog, it will be important for Zipper to meet him or her beforehand. He has spent his whole life on a farm and would probably be happiest in a new home with lots of room to run and exercise, which is must given the high energy of the breed.

These two are a mom and her 8 month-old daughter in the Nelson County pound. There are wonderful dogs everywhere in our area who need homes. Beethoven is a male 2 year-old Heeler mix who was released to our shelter on May 7 because his owner was moving and could not keep him. He has a good disposition. Because his adoption fee is only $50, Beethoven would need to be neutered at the new owner’s expense. $25 of the adoption fee would apply toward the neuter charges.

We welcome adoptions from people living out of the area or out of the state of Virginia. The application process is completed in person at the shelter.

Friends Of Homeless Animals   Merrifield, VA   703-385-0224   joeybear7@verizon.net

Hi, my name is Abbott. I’m a unique guy with a style all my own. When I first arrived at FOHA I was a calm, sweet boy and was quickly adopted. But then I became very sick, and almost died. My family nursed me back to health, and gave me lots of TLC. Too much actually, but who could blame them? Once I started getting better, my family was so happy. But they had babied me so much that I had become a spoiled brat. When I got back up on all fours, I was running the show. I know they loved me, but they just didn’t know what to do with the boy they had created. So now I’m looking for a new home: one where I am not the boss, because that is just too much pressure for me to handle. I have some wonderful friends here at FOHA who have earned my respect and have kindly reminded me where my place is. I’m a loyal and true friend to those who will take the burden of being the boss from me, and will let my care free nature show through.

Note: I can only be adopted to a home in the DC Metro area.

My name is Mac. I am a deaf, purebred Australian Cattle Dog. I am 2 and 1/2 years old and weigh approximately 45 lbs. I am really smart and know hand signals so I don’t think my deafness is a disability at all. I have been waiting a while for my “forever home” and would like nothing more than to cuddle with you. I am completely house-trained and out of the destructive phase so I am a perfectly behaved gentleman in the house. I love to go for long walks adore having my tummy rubbed. I am not a really good car rider because I get very anxious (probably from a past experience), but I behave much better if I have a rawhide or something to chew on to calm my nerves. I love all people but small children can scare me since I can’t hear them coming. I will crawl into your lap if you let me, but I don’t like most dogs and cats. Do you have it in your heart to adopt me and get me out of the kennel where I currently live? If you’re interested in me, please contact Jodi at pawsitiveguidance@hotmail.com or call her at 550-7379.

Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue   Ashland, VA   (804)537-5502   HHCANINE@aol.com

Sallie is a Australian Cattle Dog mix whose owner abandoned her and her sister. She is approximately 3 years old and a solid 50 lbs. Sallie is a little shy but warms up quickly and has already learned to walk on a leash. She is very loyal and believed to be housebroken. Sallie is good with other Male dogs and loves to play and will need a fenced yard. She is spayed, current on all shots and heartworm free.

Southside SPCA   Meherrin, VA   434-736-9595   info@southsidespca.org

This is Dinky, and she’s a ham (quite literally!). Judging by her weight some might say she was a big dog, but she’s really only a medium-sized girl. I don’t think she’s ever been on a leash, but she’s a smart girl and will figure out the details quickly when given a chance. She’s very friendly and calm, but she’s got energy, too. If you’re lookng for a 6 year-old companion that gets along with other dogs and loves to be loved, please consider Dinky —  she’ll love you for it!

Angels of Assisi  Roanoke, VA  540-344 8707  angels@angelsofassisi.org

When you come in to meet me bring a leash cause I’m going to try my best to make you love me! I’m neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, combo tested and micro-chipped. My adoption fee is $65.

Willow is a pure-bred Australian Cattle Dog, or “Blue Heeler” as they are also known. Willow is a 5 year-old female who seems to do quite well with dogs and doesn’t mind cats either. She came to the shelter as a stray. Willow walks well on a leash and would make a great country dog as this breed is highly intelligent. She may even work cattle if only given the chance. Jack is such a handsome and great great guy. Like most Cattle Dogs, he loves playing in the water. He also enjoys playing frisbee. His foster mom has been teaching him verbal and hand commands. He is protective of his home. We think Jack would do best in a home where he gets to work, do agility, and gets exercised regularly. He’d probably be better with a female dog, or as the only dog.

Jack is currently being fostered — please contact Julie at 614-443-2222 if you are interested in him.
