Adoption Questionnaire

ACDRA does not propose to know the parentage of mixes and, by this statement, informs potential adopters that we cannot and do not assure that the parentage of ACD-mixes include cattledog. Potential adopters are advised that the most appropriate approach to selecting a companion is to objectively evaluate their own situation and needs and to match that with the personality and behavior of the adoptee, regardless of parentage.

The dogs listed here have not been evaluated by ACDRA, thus we cannot vouch personally for them. We are offering these listings as a courtesy to help these dogs find homes and inquiries should be directed to those listed with each dog.

ACDRA gives shelter dogs priority for open foster homes.  If you would like to find out about any of these dogs to see if you can help them out, please look at the Shelter Dogs Needing Help page.

Following is a listing of  dogs from approved rescue groups outside of ACDRA; these dogs also need a loving home:

Friends of Mansfield Animal Shelter   Mansfield Center, CT   fomas2001@yahoo.com

*** ADOPTED!!! ***

Derry is a 1 - 1 1/2 year old red heeler mixed with what we think is some type of hound. He is taller than a heeler normally is but still medium-sized and a little on the thin side right now. He came from a kill shelter in VA and he is now safe here in CT with one of our foster homes. He is working on some confidence-building skills as he is a bit shy right now and was probably never taught how to be a family pet. He is good with other dogs — he is submissive in nature. His coat is fairly short so a bath and quick brushing is all he will need for grooming. Derry would do best in an adult-only home as he seems nervous around children and fast movements. He would benefit from a fenced-in yard as well. He is a nice boy and really needs an understanding home that will give him some serious TLC and help him become a good canine citizen. Please send us an e-mail if you are interested in our Derry boy: His adoption fee is $175.00 to residents of CT, MA or RI only please.

*** ADOPTION PENDING!!! ***

Marty is a typcial cattle dog with lots of silly antics that go along with a high energy, bascially untrained dog. He is a happy-go-lucky heeler but he prefers woman over men and seems a little leary around them. He is good with other dogs, okay with older kids but needs a home without cats! He is fairly submissive in nature and would make a great hiking companion and possibly agility dog if trained properly. He seems eager to please and wants to be with a human. He will do well with plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation. He is not going to be a laid back couch potato dog....he needs active family members that understand the nature of a herding dog. For more info please visit www.cattledog.com He does need an experienced dog person — he is not a first-time dog owner’s dog. He does jump up and needs some strict training and guidance. He needs some leashwork as well. He is about 1.5 to 2 years old. His adoption fee is $175.00 to residents of CT, MA or RI only please. No apartments or condos for Marty as he can be vocal at times. You can contact us via e-mail at: fomas2001@yahoo.com or call his foster mom at (860)642-6572

Templeton Rescue   Templeton, MA   sue@pbrc.net

Named for the cute, albeit unladylike, resting posture that most pups give up at an earlier age, Froggy is about a year old, weighs 55 lbs, is spayed, up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative, and housetrained. We are guessing from her roan freckles (she has some large, lemon-colored splotches as well), build, and personality (a natural herder) that she is a red heeler (australian cattle dog)/pitbull mix. Froggy is a good-hearted girl who is always up for a wrestle and romp with other like-minded pups. She is attentive, smart, and eager to please, making frequent eye contact in an effort to gauge her status with you. For more information, please contact shawn.g.snow@usace.army.mil. The adoption fee of $300 will help offset rescue expenses.

Jack Needs a Job: Will Work for Food & Cuddles. My name is Jack and I am part Australian Cattledog and probably part Sheltie. I was born on April 1, 2006, so I am just over 1 year old. I am mostly red and white, and weigh about 35 pounds. I am very intelligent and a fast learner. I recognize a number of commands including sit, down, stay, and shake. I am learning to roll over, walk on a loose lead, heel, wave, and whisper. I am housebroken and crate-trained. I love people, tummy rubs, and can be very cuddly. I get along okay with other dogs. I am highly energetic, and I would be a great candidate for agility, herding, tracking, Frisbee, or any other types of activities where humans and dogs work as a team. I would also be a great running and hiking parter.

Jack has been evaluated for sheep herding and did very well. He would be a very good herder with the right training. If you would like to know more about him or meet him, please contact Kathie Uber of the Pet Adoption League of Hackettstown at 908-876-9247 or momuber@comcast.net.

Kim Miller   Blairstown, NJ   908-459-5844

Buddy loves to go for long walks and rides in the car. He has been in an awful dog pound for over a year and has developed kennel aggression. Despite these issues the behaviorist has deemed him adoptable. He walks fine with people, likes to get baths, is friendly once he is out of the kennel environment. He is in basic obedience classes and is learning commands. He is not food aggessive.

Buddy is a three-year old male cattle dog mix. He is a young dog who has never had any training or guidance. He needs an experienced dog owner who will take the time and commitment to train him, give him love and understand him. He needs to be the only dog in the house and should not be placed in a home with children.

Red is a 6 month-old male red heeler looking for a forever home. His foster mom watched someone dump him out on the side of the road and took him in until she could find him a good home. Red is a puppy in need of obedience and house training, but he is already crate trained. However, like any puppy he chews on people and their belongings and needs a home with lots of chew toys and treats. Red is okay with kids, but he will jump up on you and your kids until properly trained. Red is neutered and up-to-date on shots. He is HW negative and he is on frontline for tick and flea prevention and ivermectin for HW prevention. If you can give Red his own home please email rolltideinmayberry@yahoo.com. His adoption fee is $200 to cover his medical expenses.

HOMELESS HEARTS DOG RESCUE Somerset, NJ GARY0864@AOL.COM

Hi, my name is Freddie & I’m an 8-9 month old Australian Cattle Dog. I Don’t have to tell you that I’ve got personality plus because one look at my bright face & you can see what an intelligent & friendly boy I am! Not only am I beautiful, but I’m also a gentle, sweet-natured dog. I love to play & love getting hugs & being fussed over. I’m good with other dogs & great with all people. I was found abandoned & taken to the shelter. Pound Pals says I must have been homeless for a while because I arrived very dirty. I didn’t mind getting a bath at all & sat there so nicely while being scrubbed by the nice volunteers. I was three shades lighter when they were done. Everyone agrees that I’m an exceptional dog. I’m eager to show a new family how much love I have to offer & all the things I want to learn. I’d bring smiles & fun to your life. All my devotion could be yours by contacting Pound Pals pals@psknet.com for an adoption application.

Pet Adoption Network Red Bank, NJ PANinc@att.net

Biscuit is a 10 month old cattle dog puppy. He weighs 25 lbs. Biscuit was raised without being separated from his littermates, and did not have a lot of human attention, so he is really into dogs. He’s not quite sure what to do with people, but he knows he likes them a lot. He’ll wiggle and wag his tail and is quite sweet, but at this stage playing with other dogs is his thing, and he needs to learn what people are all about. So far he does not seem to have an aggressive bone in his little body. Just needs some training, more socialization with people, love and patience. We’d prefer it if his new home had a dog buddy for him as well as human friends. Because of his past, we think he’d feel much more comfortable that way. Prior to adoption Biscuit will be neutered and heartworm tested. His vaccinations are up to date. Please send inquiries to PANinc@att.net and we will email you an application.

Companion Critters, Inc. Clark, NJ companioncritter@cs.com

Sydney had been picked up as a stray in Newark with 5 puppies and was taken to a shelter at the beginning of February 2005. Once her puppies were weaned they were separated from her. Sadly, they all contracted parvo and died. Sydney does not know her babies are gone. The last she saw them they were fine so as far as she knows, they have gone on to happy homes. The shelter staff said she was the best dog mom they had ever had.
At about 6 years of age with not having had even minimal care in her previous life, Sydney needed some work to bring her to adoptable status. She had lived for years with a broken hip, all the while cranking out litters of puppies. Sydney had femoral head excision surgery to fix her hip and underwent pysical therapy for 3 months. She now walks perfectly with no limp at all, for the first time in years. Sydney had root canals done on all 4 canine teeth which had been fractured years before. She was also spayed and had a mammary tumor removed. After 3 surgeries in 6 weeks and completing physical therapy, Sydney is now good as new. She will often zoom laps around the tree in the back yard with a big smile on her face, just because she now can!
Sydney is a very sweet girl who loves belly rubs. She walks very nicely on a leash and it is important that she be walked frequently to maintain the muscle tone she now has in her leg which was atrophied before her hip surgery. Sydney weighs about 45 pounds. Sydney is meticulously housetrained. She will not go out in the rain but will hold it for as long as it takes for the rain to stop. She is trustworthy when left home alone.

Stray from the Heart   New York City, New York   914-774-4089 or 212-496-1053   adopt@StrayfromtheHeart.org

Madonna and her sister Sabrina have lived their entire 5 or 6 years together. When their family moved to a home that didn’t allow dogs, the girls were taken to the high-kill city shelter (about a month ago) where they told the staff to euthanize them. SFTH heard about these two cattle dog mixes and made some calls. Within days the sisters were being boarded at a local vet’s office where SFTH volunteers walk them each day. Although we did save their lives we are in desperate need of a home, even a foster home will do. Unfortunately they are still in boarding, living together in a small crate and in serious need of their own space. Both have wonderful temperaments and deserve a loving home. Because it is not known if they have been around young children, a home with older kids is preferred. They have been spayed and are up to date with vaccinations.

If you would like to meet these extraordinary Cattle girls, or just one of them, please contact Beth at “Stray from the Heart” Rescue (New York City) at 914-774-4089 or 212-496-1053. Or for faster consideration please complete our online adoption/foster application at: www.strayfromtheheart.org.

Freckles is my name and high activity is my game! I’m an Australian Cattle Dog mix who would love to do a job — any job you want to train me to do. I love people but I need to be an only dog with no cats. A nice farm or home with a 6-foot stockade fence would be terrific, as I can jump 4-foot fences with ease. My adoption fee is $200.

NORTH CAROLINA

Christine Tindall   Cornelius, NC   704-655-1450   crimay@netscape.net

Bear is a gorgeous 1 year-old neutered male with tons of energy! In July Bear was abandoned with a broken leg by his owner but has since recovered wonderfully at his temporary foster home. He is up-to-date on all shots and is on a monthly heartworm preventative. He is completely house-broken and sleeps on his doggy pillow at night. Bear is very healthy and loves to run and chase tennis balls and frisbees. He plays very well with his two foster dog brothers and in general takes well to new dogs. Bear loves to go for walks and would make the perfect running companion. Because of Bear’s high energy he would be best suited in an active home where he can exercise regularly and possibly take up agility classes or flyball. Bear is a herding dog and therefore should not be in a home with cats or small children. He does not do well with electronic fences and would do best in a fenced in yard. He is territorial and nips at the heels and feet of people entering the yard or house. We are working with a trainer to help Bear overcome this issue but he will need reinforcement at his new home as well. Bear’s perfect forever home would be with someone who has experience with herding dogs and will continue training and socializing him. Bear is a wonderful, loving dog and deserves a loving forever home. If you are interested in Bear please call Christine at 704-655-1450 or via email at crimay@netscape.net.

Animal Protectors New Kensington, PA 724-339-7388

“Mickie” aprox 1 1/2 year old male, blue merle with black head. At Animal Protectors (no-kill shelter) in New Kensington, PA 24 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Was owned by a young girl who moved away and gave Mickie to her grandparents. They tied him out to a dog box, he escaped and was brought to the shelter. Grandparents notified but they do not want him. He is wonderful with both humans and other dogs, a bit shy, may have been handled roughly by the man, but he warms up quickly and is just a handsome joy of a dog. Contact Animal Protectors at: 724-339-7388.

Derrick Well my neck is all healed and I am roaring to go in more ways than one. Ready for my forever home that's for sure! I am definitely a cattledog. I have the personality of one and the vocal expressions to go with it. I love to romp and play, and I play rough and hard. I am having a ball with my 59 lb brother here and I am only 20 some lbs. I definitely need a fenced yard as I love to run. I herd the other dogs like a good Cattledog will do, and I will do that to kids as well. I listen pretty good, but I definitely would love to go to obedience school to learn to be an even better dog. I am completely house broken but do not like being in a crate (most cattle dogs don't). I love to sleep with my foster mom and the rest of the crew on her bed. My favorite ipast time is playing with balls, rope toys, and I love to play fetch. I need someone who is energetic as I am FULL of energy. I like to be loved and I give kisses in return. I seem to like kids but could be a little rough with young ones. I would be a good protector of them but I just play rough. I get attached to my owner very quickly and would be devoted for life. If you know dog talk I will even carry on a conversation with you. Cats - well, I think I would chase them. I know I want to get the neighbors cat who wanders over here and I chase the squirrels and birds too. I am a sweet adorable little guy and with the proper training I would make a wonderful devoted family member. I am around 1 year old the vet says so still a puppy at heart. Posted 10/24/05 Derrick is a very sweet little Beagle/ACD mixed male, who is between 2-3 years old. He is up to date on all shots, neutered, heartworm tested negative and on preventative. Derrick was put in the night pen of a rural shelter with a rubberband around his neck. The rubberband has created a 3 inch cut in Derrick's neck. Despite Derrick's severe injury, he has remained a sweet and happy little boy. He let the vet and the shelter director remove the rubber band that was embedded in his neck, shave the fur around it and clean out the wound with no growling or biting. He continues to improve with each day and is having lots of fun in his foster home. Derrick is looking for that special family that will love him forever. Please apply today! Adoption application, home visit and adoption fee required. If you would like to apply for adoption, please complete the online application at www.furryfriendsnetwork.com

Furry Suits Rescue   Herndon, VA   (703) 889-5335   crossposts@furrysuitsrescue.org

Sadie is a young purebred red Australian Cattle Dog that we rescued from a shelter. She was given up by her caretaker because she and their other dog didn’t get along. Sadie is very sweet and friendly and submissive to people, but she does not get along with other dogs so she needs to be the only animal. And although Sadie would probably be fine with older kids (12+), we think she would do best in an all-adult household. Cattle Dogs are a working breed, and she will need exercise and a place to run off her energy, so a large fenced yard would be ideal. Sadie is being fostered with the Furry Suits Rescue in Herndon, VA. If interested in adopting Sadie, please contact dogs@furrysuitsrescue.org or call (703) 889-5335.

Dee Hawkins   (434) 975-4545   britdog@ntelos.net

Blair is a textbook Australian Cattle Dog, right down to the barky yip and desire to hug. He is a very sweet boy, and is good with other dogs. He’s tri-color, about 3 yrs old, 30-35 lbs, active and playful.

Susie Cook   Musette55@aol.com

Lexi was pulled from a high-kill pound in Southwest Virginia on March 3rd and is currently living with a foster family in Blacksburg. She is a pure-bred female Blue Heeler who is approximately 5 years old. We were unsure if she was up-to-date on all her shots, so she recently received her rabies and first series of vaccinations and will be spayed on March 19th. Lexi is housebroken and crate-trained. She does not appear to be food-aggressive. She loves to be hugged and to have her tummy rubbed. She rolls over on her back when rubbed. She is great at catching things! I have 5 inside dogs and two inside/outside dogs and Lexi is fine with them, although my female, dominant red heeler has “disciplined” her a few times. She is good around horses - we have three. She walks well on a leash and was probably obedience-trained as she always walks on the left side in a “heel” position. While she is very people-oriented, she would probably be best in a home with children older than 10 years.

Mark Plank   mstephen.plank@cox.net

Emma has lead a very tragic life to date. Emma came to her foster home from the Richmond Animal Shelter and little is known of her previous life other than she was surrendered because she was pregnant. She’s had very poor care in her life; her front upper and lower teeth are severely worn down or broken off in what may be a case of trying to escape being caged. She’s an ACD / German Shepherd mix, estimated to be six years old, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Regardless of her past she is a very trusting and loving girl. She likes kids and gets along with other dogs, big or small and shows no interest in cats (her foster home has three other dogs). Emma is very people-oriented, a little shy at first, but craves human attention and companionship. Not a pure-bred, but has prominent shepherd appearance and temperament. She rides great in a car, walks well on a leash, prefers to be inside with her family, understands sit and likes to give either paw to offer her friendship. She is a quiet and calm dog and not prone to getting into mischief. Even though her front teeth are missing her molars are intact, in good shape and she’s able to eat regular dry dog food without problems. Emma was diagnosed with heartworm during the summer. Treatment was started immediately and over time she received three injections with the last one completed on September 18, 2006. She has responded well to good nutrition, medical treatment and lots of love. In mid-November, she can resume normal physical activity which should be slow at first, but working up to normal running and playing. Physical activity during her recovery has been very restricted. In March of 2007, she needs to be rechecked for heartworm. Emma is an excellent companion for a laid back owner. She is very happy to be with her human friends.

Conrad is a sweet older gentleman who is good with other dogs and wonderful with kids. He is lame in one front leg so he hops around lifting his stiff leg as he goes. We think he had an injury that never healed correctly and he now has a touch of arthritis but he is happy and not a high maintenance dog. Conrad is housebroken and barks only when someone he doesn’t know comes to the house, so if you want a good watchdog who loves his people and is good with other animals and kids, Conrad is your man! For more info, call Liz at 540-832-5388.

Bandit is a deaf Australian Cattle Dog in need of assistance. He is a 4 year-old neutered male who is the product of domestic violence (he became protective of the wife who was being abused). He apparently responds well to hand signals and gets along with other dogs. Bandit will require a special kind of owner.

Mac was happily rescued by a nice woman who has two Australian Cattle Dogs of her own. He lives at a horse-training facility and likes it but the two females have decided it’s time for him to move out! Mac is great with people and would love to have one to himself. He is incredibly smart and attentive and loves to please. No one knew that Mac is deaf until his rescuer figured it out. She guesses that he was just so attentive in the shelter that no one ever noticed. (Deafness is a recessive trait in Australian Cattle Dogs.) Mac would love to meet you and impress you with how well he has overcome this hearing loss.

If you would like to know more about this pet or to arrange a meeting, please contact Noahs Ark Foundation at re-homing@nafva.org.

She is super friendly and great with people and other animals. For more information contact: Linda Dewell at (276) 677-3419.

Jersey is an energetic girl who would thrive with brisk exercise. She loves to run and likes to be near people, so she would be an excellent running partner. This active, playful dog needs a fenced yard. In her previous home, she lived with children and was gentle with them. However, she doesn't like to pulled by her collar, so she shouldn't go to a home with young children. Her owners couldn't keep her because they couldn't give her the time and exercise she needs. Jersey is one girl who will make a loyal and lively companion.

Karmana Farm Eastern Panhandle, WV 304-283-1502 karmanafarm@hughes.net

The gleam in Artemis’ eyes seems to indicate that she already knows she is a very special girl. Bright, fearless, agile and perhaps we should repeat ourselves and say “very bright”, Artie is eagerly awaiting an experienced Agility Competitor or savvy Herding Dog Enthusiast who knows how to think, not one, not two, but perhaps three steps ahead in “dog think”. We are fairly certain that she is not a full-bred heeler because she weighs only about 28 lbs and her legs and feet seem smaller than the breed standard. Yet she surely did inherit all of the skill, cunning and charm of her dominant heeler breed and the ruggedly handsome good looks too. Artemis is named for the Goddess of the hunt and protector of the wild animals, and based on what we observed when we helped her and her little sister to safety, it was probably Artemis’ skill that allowed the pair to survive together on their own in the fields. Artemis is best suited to a home where she can be in charge, or perhaps be the only dog. Artie would capable of living in a well structured pack under the knowledgeable guidance of a keen observer of animal behavior. She does not suffer fools gladly and she has been quite competitive with others in her foster pack who questioned her position. Above all though, Artie is a lover. She will bound onto your lap from three paces across the floor once she is invited and will roll back in your arms to be held just like an infant, but an infant who wants a good belly rub while gazing into your eyes with a “so what shall we do for our next little adventure” look. She is thoroughly devoted to her person, and if she chooses to adopt you, you will know for certain that you are passionately loved. The requested adoption donation for Artemis is $200.

Wrangler is a 9-12 month Blue Heeler. He is crate trained and housebroken. He recently has been brought back by his adopter. Unfortunately they didn't have the time to spend with him that he needed. He is a young, high energy dog. He has been neutered, HWT and on preventive, UTD on all vaccinations, rabies, worming, and flea preventive. Wrangler is excellent with children, other dogs, and cats. He is highly intelligent and will require someone with knowledge of the breed. He would excel in obedience, agility, fly ball, Frisbee, etc. If you are interested please contact me at rhaught@comcast.net.
